WHAT A STORM!!!

We listened to the weather report and read the forecast and discussion on the internet that came from the National Weather Service in Medford, Or. 5 feet of snow predicted it warned us. We have heard that warning before. But these huge warnings haven’t amounted too much. Oh, sure a dusting here and there but mostly just miserably cold.

This time the forecast was accurate. The winds howled here in Lake Shastina for two days and nights sometimes gusting up to 70 miles per hour. The rain came and it looked like someone had turned on millions of fire hoses full blast and pointed them directly at us. Mt. Shasta City was covered in snow and freeway closures were the rule rather than the exception.

The great thing about Siskiyou County is its geography. We lived in south county,Mt. Shasta for over 20 years on 8 acres with a long driveway that ended up on a gravel road maintained sporadically by the on again off again homeowners association. So when a huge storm dumped on us we were at the mercy of a neighbor who had a backhoe. But all 25 of us homeowners were at the mercy of the guy lucky enough to have a backhoe. So we took it very seriously when there were storm warnings and stocked up on groceries and firewood. I forgot to mention that electricity becomes a luxury if it stays on.

So we decided to take advantage of the geography and move to central Siskiyou County. There is a phenomena called rain shadow. The mountains keep the heavy precipitation and most of the snow to the south of Lake Shastina. So that is where we moved, a mere 16 miles north of Mt. Shasta, threw away our snow shovels, sold our snow blower and it feels like heaven. Lake Shastina has it’s own year round Trent Jones golf course. People play there in January.

For those of you who enjoy the snow, you should see Mt. Shasta City right now. It is lovely. Snow is still clinging to the Pine trees and it does look magical. Oh, yes, the ski park beckons and you can ice skate right in town at the local arena.
